Our Lord

Trees in the Bible hold a special place with their profound symbolism.  Some of the most powerful images of Christianity come from trees.  Reflect on how the seed has to die and be buried so that it can rise again to life-not just any kind of life but life that gives abundant fruits and new seeds.  You die that others may live.  This is the life of Christ.  It is the ultimate image of self-sacrifice and love for others, and in Jesus’ words, there is no greater love than someone laying down his life for his friends.

“Out of the ground the Lord God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”

— Genesis2:9

“By the river banks on both sides, will grow every tree for food, whose leaf won’t wither, neither will its fruit fail.  It will produce new fruit every month, because its waters issue out of the sanctuary.  It’s fruit will be for food, and its leaf for healing.”  — Ezekial 42:12

“For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace.  The mountains and the hills will break out before you into singing; and all the trees of the fields will clap their hands.”  — Isaiah 55:12

“Then I will give you the rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.” —  Leviticus 26:4

“Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh.

For he will be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river,

And will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green, and will not be concerned in the year of drought.  It won’t cease from yielding fruit.“  — Jeremiah 17:7-8

“But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God’s house.  I trust in God’s loving kindness forever and ever.”  — Psalm 52:8
